Script Translators Needed -- Posted by Neil_ on Monday, June 9 2003
I am currently looking for native Japanese speakers who have a solid grasp of English and some time to spare. The scripts in question are not from DragonQuest 4, but from DragonQuest III (SFC). A knowledge of DragonQuest games is very helpful, but by no means necessary. If you are a native Japanese speaker and you think you can help, please email me here.

Olah! -- Posted by Neil_ on Thursday, April 3 2003
If you hadn't guessed by now, I've been busy with other things lately, and while I continue to work on DQ4psx, I do so at an extremly slow pace. In other words, if someone else is working on this game and knows anything about hacking, they'll probably finish before me. Good foor them. I've gotten several emails from people who say they're working on it, but I get the distinct feeling they're just looking for status updates from me. So what ever. In any case, here's what's been done on DQ4 lately: nothing. I found the text data a while ago, it's compressed. Using PEC I found the uncompressed text stream floating around in RAM, so I know what the values are. I even know where it's coming from thanks to some debugging. If I spend another four hours or so on it with some psx docs and a little luck I should probably be able to figure out the compression and write some dumpers and stuff. However, that probably won't be happening any time soon. I'm on academic overload at school. Lots of classes lots of work. So if any of you still expected anything from me, don't. ;) I don't plan on quitting my hacking work on DQ4psx, I just also don't expect to be finishing up anytime soon.

Oh, also, Satsu is suposedly working on finishing up Mei Tantei Holmes. I passed the game off to him because I was having no luck finding someone to edit the script who didn't just up and disapear. Satsu will probably just edit the script himself or something. *shrug*

Who is driving? -- Posted by Neil_ on Tuesday, August 27 2002
Oh my god bear is driving how can that be?!?

Yeah, it's been a while and I wanted to make sure I hadn't forgotten the news updater password. :)

I haven't heard back from anyone on how the Holmes script is doing, so I'm assuming it's dead. If I don't hear back from any of the like 50,000,000 people out there who have a copy of the script by December, I'm just going to like release the scripts on the page and let someone who feels like holding a gun to some script editors head take care of finishing the game.

There's nothing new to report, and there probably won't be until mid September when I actually have some free time again.

I am looking for someone with experience in Playstation Development/System Archatecture to lend me a hand with DQ4, or at least explain some stuff to me.. like give me a general overview of the GPU...

The site is now 99% 640x480 compatable. Yay for low res web surfers! Only one page isn't quite low res compatable. Find it and win absolutely nothing!

Mei Tantei Holmes update -- Posted by Neil_ on Sunday, July 14 2002
Shortly after my last update I was emailed by a kind soul who has offered to edit the script. I have a feeling this one may just come through. For the three people out there who actually care about this game, this is definately good news. :)

Still alive... -- Posted by Neil_ on Tuesday, July 9 2002
My hobby time has been greatly reduced by summer work and guitar playing, but I still am devoting a few hours a week to hacking... thus there really hasn't been much news to report, nor will there probably be any of any real significance to report until October or so... In the mean time the following short progress reports (or lack there of) will have to tide the three of you who still read this page over. :)

DQ4 (PSX) - I've been playing through the game getting savestates to help me along in hacking. I found the font quite a while ago and last week finally got around to writing a program to "decompress" it. It's not really compressed, but it's just stored in a funky fassion. The text is also compressed, or at least apears to be at first glance. I don't know much of anything about playstation assembly, so it's going to be a rather slow road.. fortunately for me there is plenty of documentation on the playstation, so it shouldn't be all that dificult. The real probably is probably going to be finding translation support for a game as large as this one. Of course I suppose I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. :)

Akazukin Cha Cha - Sadly, no real progress has been made yet. The only reason I'm working on this project is for my friend Chojin (who wants to translate it), but he hasn't really gotten back to me with the stuff I gave him months ago, so I dunno. I plan on writing some stuff for this game when DQ4 and FF1 get me so pissed off I need a break, but I'm really not going to take this project very seriously until he does. And before anyone else asks, no I don't need aditional translators for this project. I promised Chojin he would be the only translator, and with that promise I shall stick.

FF1 - I'm currently awaiting a patch from Strag0 with the text inserted so that I can rearrange the menus and what not to make stuff fit right. I'm not the project manager on this project, and I have no clue when it'll be done.

Mei Tantei Holmes - Good lord this game (or its creators) must hate me. It was hacked, dumped, and translated easy enough, but getting the scripts edited as proven to be like pulling teeth. I think the current count on script editors who have offered to help and then bailed is up at like 8 or so now. I can't even remember all the names of people I sent it off to... Poor Sherlock.

There are some other games I'm working on, and some others that I'm really not. I've become rather fickle with my hacking. I really don't play games anymore.. haven't in a while.. I just like ripping them apart... Maybe video games have shortened my attention span to the point where I don't even have the attention span to play video games. How sad would that be... Ah well. I'll probably have some pictures from my DQ4 font viewer up on the site once I clean up the display a bit. There's still some random garbage and bit of tweaking to get the psudo variable width tiles to display properly. Updates shall follow when deemed apropriate..
